Owning a car can be quite expensive as we all know. Besides gas, which is almost a moving target cost projection, maintenance is an on-going hassle. For many reasons, AAA membership is absolutely key to helping you save money on a variety of car-related expenses. I was reminded again recently of how valuable my membership is when our car battery died.
I had almost forgotten why I had a AAA membership besides the awesome discounts until our car wouldn’t start this past week. Dead battery, no problem! AAA’s mobile app has gotten even better over time and now you can even summon a tow truck directly from it. That’s pretty awesome., I think. Using the app, you can pinpoint your location using GPS so there’s no guessing where you are. There’s also an estimated status so you can get an idea of how long it will take. Here’s where the roadside assistance benefit kicked in nicely.
AAA membership discounts
In addition to the many discounts that comes with AAA membership, when you need to use their roadside assistance for a battery replacement, they waive the labor cost. That’s huge. According to Repair Pal, the average battery replacement cost is $174 to $282 and labor is estimated to be $47 to $61 of that. Replacing my battery cost $172, which seems high, but since I didn’t have to drive my car to the shop, wait, and pay for labor, it was a no-brainer.
AAA membership ranges from $52 to $122, depending on how many miles of towing area you would like included. If you live in a rural area, or take road trips in the middle of nowhere, it’s probably a good idea to get the deluxe membership. Regardless of the membership level, you get access to many different discounts – which some vary at the lower membership levels – but are otherwise available to all. Hotel and car rate discounts alone will easily pay for membership.
